The Sun is in the West is a series of monologues about a small town written from the point of view of a groundskeeper, a photographer, a historian, and a musician. When first performed audience members spent so much time discussing the memories recalled by the performance that the manager had to ask the audience to clear out so that he could close the theater. It's reminiscent of Our Town, but more specifically aestheticized -- each performer represents a different way of seeing. The Sun Is In the West is a beautifully written work. The first time I read it, I was intrigued by the stories that are woven through it. They are so reminiscent of Southern families - the tales that one generation passes down to the other so they aren't neglected or forgotten. I enjoyed the imagery in the book - they painted scenes so vivid that it seems I could almost reach out and touch them. Damon Falke did a wonderful job of creating timeless characters and situations that remind us of people we've loved and lost. He is a master weaver of words and can press images into our minds as clearly as flowers pressed behind glass. One of my favorite spots in the book is the scene where young Peepot ruins his uncle's valuable saddle when it is drug beneath a runaway horse. I can just see that scared young boy, admitting his transgression to an uncle he loves. This book makes you think - and remember - and dream - and that is exactly what books are supposed to do. I highly recommend anything that Damon Falke pens - it is all extraordinary.
